It seems like I heard that backstory before that manga was a thing. Tomino did an edgy novelization ages ago where everyone is screwing each other. It got an English translation even, strangely enough. This was before the anime was ever licensed here.

Oh. I thought it might have been in the novel but I heard it was from the manga specifically (I never read either).
I think the original English publication was meant to appeal to people who were familiar with the robot anime that already had a presence in the U.S. like Voltroon or Blobotech.
Reading the novels is one of the many overdue weeaboo consooming activities I never did. I meant to get a new ereader to read them but still haven't.
Somebody has been fan translating Tomino novels including Garzeys Wing. Deep down that's what I really want to read.
