What's a Paladin?
A warrior that adheres to a code of honor and goodness that loses given powers of smiting and healing when knowing committing evil acts or associating with evil beings.
No, it's a bad Spoony-joke.
It's an Ultima 9 line he tried to make a meme when it already was memed and buried...

What are you talking about? He displays so much misery and bitterness in that video, which in hindsight we know it's not acted.

Well, the actual content, tone, and delivery of the video is awful, yes, but late-Spoony Experience is all about the sheer Bukowskian condition of one Noah Antwiller, AVATAR OF EARTH! and all around asshole.

They kinda tried to fix that in 4th Edition - you have only 5 alignments (Lawful Good, Good, Neutral, Evil, Chaotic Evil), so there's more room to wiggle your character's beliefs inside each alignment. They also got rid of the "only LG can be paladins", and paladins became champions of their deities, no matter what their alignment was.

Oh, and there weren't creature types tied to alignments anymore. Not all Angels are of the subtype [Lawful Good], evil gods could have angels as well. Frankly, I enjoyed 4th Ed. more than any other edition of D&D, and I played all the way from the OG one through 4th.
This is good. I stopped following D&D years ago but occasionally will watch videos on youtube about broken meta-game builds for the fun of it. Nobody talks about Paladins, though. Everyone seems to understand the complaints Paladin players have about the GM that's out to get them but 99% of video makers seem to buy into the Lawful Stupid stereotype that Paladin players get.

That mentality of, "if the Paladin joins the group then we don't get to have any fun, let's ruin it for them," and turning it into the Paladin being the problem instead of the other people (or GM) just being dickwads.
If people cant make a Paladin work or work with their group they lack imagination, fantasy and creativity. When one lacks all of that they shouldnt be playing D&D in the first place.

Well, he was bound to run out of new stuff to tweet eventually. He has probably done it before, but nobody noticed because nobody's reading all of that shit.

The whole Good/Evil- Detect Evil thing pisses me off for this exact reason. It makes so much intrigue impossible in the world because any random cleric can just use this magic detection spell to tell who the bad guy is. It gets even more retarded when you think about how the world should actually work based on this. Why are evil people, religions, etc ever able to get into positions of power? Surely at least a few nations would start doing random alignment tests like drug tests and kick any leaders to the curb the moment a test showed they were evil.
Any D&D world should be a Good utopia.

And man, I wasn't even going into D&D religions. How much sense does it make to join an objectively evil church?

"Welcome to the Chaotic Evil church of Fhug'U, He Who Wants To See The World Burn. We want to destroy the world for the lulz, and our ceremonies involve murder-raping the weakest member our group. To top it all off, your soul will be eaten by demons upon death. Isn't that wonderful?!"
Uhm people join satanic cults every day so its not that weird. The lust for power and not being peasant #10334 will make people insane and not thinking straight. Of course normal people would never even think about it but that is the point, the (fantasy setting) world isnt just normal people now is it. Daily people sacrifice a bit of their humanity for more power or money so its really not that weird. If there was a church today that said 25% of our followers will die but the 75% others will become powerful as gods thered be fucking lines of idiots all thinking they wont be in that 25%.

Also in their eyes theyre not evil for no reason. Usually they deceive themselves or their followers, this world needs to end so we can start over / create a better one etc etc.

Real world satanic cults aren't exactly as cartoonishly evil as D&D would represent them. Matter of fact, most satanists are just die hard humanists that buy into the whole EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEVIL thing because it scares religious folk and that's funny to them.

There are cults out there that rape and murder people but labeling them all as, "satanic," is actually pretty ignorant of other cultures. Sounds like something the Pope would do because he didn't feel like acknowledging another religion's name or something.

The thing that makes this silly in D&D is that evil is an objective, perceivable metric. Ya can't really deceive yourself on that regard.

Also D&D gods are definitely real, and so is the afterlife. Lust for power and annoying your parents feels a bit shallow if you know that your soul will get anally raped by Balors or Pit Fiends for eternity.

The post you were replying to was talking about a D&D style of evil church. One that practically permeates evil miasma where plants die on the grounds and there are bodies hanging in the windows and impaled on spikes outside of the gates.

You then said it wasn't weird because people joined satanic cults all the time which aren't as cartoony as that.

That's what I was getting at.
