See, my problem with this alignment system isn't so much that it's bad as the fact that they don't treat it properly in any way. Law and Order, Neutrality, and Chaos are great. Leave those the way they are. The whole Good, Neutral, Evil thing is where the issues come in.

The two shouldn't be combined. It should be Law/Neutral/Chaos is your alignment and Good/Neutral/Evil is your nature and they should be treated as separate issues entirely. You can still claim to be playing a Chaotic Neutral character but your thought process should always keep in mind only the appropriate attribute, rather than the overall alignment as a whole.

This would also allow Paladins to be more than just Lawful Good since religiously driven figures are notorious for being selfish, when you get down to their true motivations.

They kinda tried to fix that in 4th Edition - you have only 5 alignments (Lawful Good, Good, Neutral, Evil, Chaotic Evil), so there's more room to wiggle your character's beliefs inside each alignment. They also got rid of the "only LG can be paladins", and paladins became champions of their deities, no matter what their alignment was.

Oh, and there weren't creature types tied to alignments anymore. Not all Angels are of the subtype [Lawful Good], evil gods could have angels as well. Frankly, I enjoyed 4th Ed. more than any other edition of D&D, and I played all the way from the OG one through 4th.

The whole Good/Evil- Detect Evil thing pisses me off for this exact reason. It makes so much intrigue impossible in the world because any random cleric can just use this magic detection spell to tell who the bad guy is. It gets even more retarded when you think about how the world should actually work based on this. Why are evil people, religions, etc ever able to get into positions of power? Surely at least a few nations would start doing random alignment tests like drug tests and kick any leaders to the curb the moment a test showed they were evil.

Any D&D world should be a Good utopia.

And man, I wasn't even going into D&D religions. How much sense does it make to join an objectively evil church?

I think this alignment restriction no longer exists sicne 2 editions. Even 3rd edition introduced variant classes for different alignments.

As of 3/3.5 rules I was still forced to be Lawful Good if I wanted to roll my usual Paladin. There was Blackguard but even that required Lawful Evil and wasn't able to deviate.
