I found John Rambo to be fun, ultra-violent shlock at it's best. First Blood is overrated.
First Blood is the only one that had a point. All the sequels missed the fucking point and turned him into a generic asshole action hero.
Totally. And John Rambo was the culmination of it, fully embracing every trope and not even pretending to make a point anymore. Pure shlock. That's why I like it.

It's one of these strange franchise that should never habe become one in the first place, because the very first entry kinda ruled it out.

Every franchise should be a franchise. You can always ignore the lesser entries.

Fair enough.

Especially since the original ending had Rambo killing himself. That's why Kirk Douglas dropped out of playing Trautman, he thought Rambo should die and, though they did film that ending with Richard Crenna instead, everyone else thought having Rambo off himself would send a bad message.

Imagine spending a billion US dollars to be a loser. Could've watched animu and be one for free.

Even if he eventually ended up surviving, Mr. "War destroyed my life" doesn't strike me as one who would gleefully return to that which fucked him up to begin with.

But Mr. "Hollywood didn't want me and I need something besides Rocky" needed something to carry on.

Were there even still POWs in Vietnam in 1985? That movie made no sense.

1974's Frankenstein And The Monster From Hell was a pretty shabby end to the franchise, but it does at least give the aging Cushing a dignified sendoff, suggesting that his incarnation of Frankenstein would spend the rest of his days fruitlessly tinkering away, hiding inside a dirty old mental asylum in a semidelusional state. It's an appropriately morbid and sad ending.

So I liked that. The Monster was utter shit though, and the rest of the cast and script was pretty mediocre. It was nice to finally see all the grisly details of Frankenstein's usual operations.
