It was a children's book meant to be a simple story. Some stuff was retconned after LotR to make it fit the sequel better. Tolkien was doing George Lucas decades before George Lucas.

They had a chance to make a good movie, they had an established franchise, characters, actors, and director. Alas, they delved too greedily and too deep and decided they needed to try and make an epic trilogy instead.
