The prequels had thins about them that would work as vidya. Or as cartoons in the Genndy Tartakovsky style. Making them movies in the sense that Lucas wanted was a disaster. The next best thing I can think of about his vision is him hiring the Matrix choreographers, getting Donnie Yen and Jackie Chan back then and giving them sticks while adding the glow effects later and call it a jedi fight scene. All that as an exciting climax to a one hour of talk and sightseeing other planets that would otherwise be the exploration in Breath of the Wild or any open world game.

They could've worked as movies too, if Lucas had a team that would take his ideas and make them work. That's exactly what happened in the original trilogy. Look up "How Star Wars was saved in the edit" on youtube. Very enlightening video that isn't too long. The first movie would've been damn near the same shit as the prequels, except Lucas's test audience told him it was hot garbage and he went to his editors and writers and BEGGED them to recut it to make it more exciting, cinematic, and accessible. He gave them a free pass to do whatever they needed to, and those people deserve as much credit as Lucas himself for it working. Lucas is a "big idea" guy who can't handle specific plot details, pacing, or dialogue.

I've seen it, it's a pretty interesting one. Too bad this timeline is fucked and all we got was a Rick telling us it's gonna be great.

One thing I didn't agree with is their assessment that the Death Star was just "there waiting to be blown up," and that dialogue had to have been added in to indicate the Rebel Alliance was in danger. No motherfucker the Death Star warped to the system cos they tracked the Falcon there. It's not like it was just wandering through the galaxy and it stumbled upon Yavin. I hate to give Lucas credit, but I think that was a case where the audience shouldn't have needed to be told and figure it out for themselves.

He may have caught it at the same Bilderberg-Illuminati meeting as Prince Albert in a Can. I guess lizardmen aren't immune.

The dialogue that added urgency was the countdown. It makes it clear the heroes are on a clock and creates dramatic tension. Sure, the audience can assume the Death Star is blow up the base but... why haven't they already fired? Why are they waiting around while fighting off this attack? The audience would wonder and it would distract from what was happening on screen.

Sometimes it really is better to spell things out, otherwise you get an explanation in the manual and several hundred Film Theory videos and no one wants to deal with that.

You /tv/ posters are pathetic with your pro-Lucas contrarianism.

I think the prequels had things about them that worked. It had all the right parts to make a good film, and then George took over completely.
Seriously this. It had the potential to be far more mature and complex compared to the original, the blueprint for the films are perfectly fine. The Emperor played both sides of politics in order to get into power by orchestrating a war, which made people more likely to make him dictator. Anakin falls to the dark side because he was forced to not be with his mother, saw her die, had to hide his relationship with his wife and has visions of his wife dying, with a lot of those problems being caused by the Jedi being ultra uptight about their code making him resentful. He also grew up a slave, which should have been portrayed as more brutal rather than him just working a job.

The problem is the execution was fucked up. Anakin's issues should have been private between him and Padme, and he should have been a happy Jedi in front of Obi Wan but resentful at how controlling the Jedi are with their ultra strict rules. Like Plinkett said, Padme should have been the one hitting on him, who gives a fuck if she is a senator? Being a whiny emo shit in front of everyone was fucking awful and made the line "Ani was a good friend" make no fucking sense.

The Emperor's role was barely a thing until the 3rd movie. He was a regular senator or an evil hood wearing prick, he didn't look like he was making the conflict worse by giving both sides shitty advice. There should have been more scenes with him talking to leaders of both sides of the conflict and giving speeches that radicalise the republic. He barely did any of this and it wasn't even focused on since Lucas was more concerned about Anakin.
