The backlash was very sudden. Faster than what TPM's criticism took over time by the masses. TLJ currently holds the fastest/largest decline of any Star Wars film to date thus far (domestically speaking).

Didn't that also happen to Batman vs Superman and many other blockbusters of [current year]? An amazing opening weekend thanks to hype and shit, only for everything to drop fast because crappy movies can't sustain themselves all that well?
(Also I totally bet Trump and Russia are bribing people to not watch the movie.)

I did that to some extent at the time, because we just didn't know. Rey seemed to be not explained, but we didn't know whether or not they'd explain her in a satisfying way later. They had 2 sequels to do that.
Now we know, and she's fucking nobody. It was questionable IMO if she was a true mary sue in force awakens because we just didn't know anything about her. Now we know and it's obvious she IS a marey sue.
I cut TFA some slack too at the time that I shouldn't have. I just couldn't believe, and still have trouble believing, that they had NO PLAN for this new trilogy of a MULTI-BILLION DOLLAR FRANCHISE. It's absolutely fucking retarded insane.

Okay, finally saw The Last Jedi. Felt like they took the Force Awakens backlash seriously, as the film goes out of its way to avoid being iconic. No lightsaber duels, Snoke goes down like a punk, we learn that the questions set up by Ep VII were pretty much all irrelevant, and Luke dies out of exhaustion.
I am extremely conflicted over this. On one hand, I can see where Rian was going with this - there's heavy themes of rebirth and innovation in the film(exemplified in the Yoda scene) and it provides excellent character development for Kylo, Rey and Luke(the three are easily the best things about the film), but as a hardcore fan, I felt a little let down by the fact that I'm supposed to see the original trilogy as old and obsolete(at least with Han in the last film, it didn't feel like he was superceded, he stood equal with his successors). And I would've appreciated getting off that damn island faster.
So overall, it's a good film, but it requires you to - as Yoda put it - "let go of everything you're afraid to lose".

Pretty proud that this series hasn't gotten a penny out of me since the phantom menace.

That is indeed awesome. I wish I could say that. The family says they want to go to this, so I'm probably gonna get dragged along. :/ Apparently my family owns some Disney stock, so I'm trying to look on the bright side of Disney taking over the whole fucking world.
