I honestly don't know how expensive cast iron skillets are now because I bought mine about fifteen years ago and stil use them because they last forever.

Good kitchen stuff can be pretty cheap. You can spend a lot of money on knives if that gets you off, but a cheap knife set from Target chops garlic just fine.

I have two pans (skillets). One carbon steel and one stainless steel.
Carbon steel and cast iron are really interchangeable. The stainless steel is primarily for acidic stuff like tomato sauce. But it will also make you a much better cook. Temperature control becomes more important. If you can fry an egg in it and have it not stick at all, you've learned more than you'll ever learn with the toxic non-stick garbage.

Massive upside is that they will both last you forever.
