I mean, the Castlevania show unironically claims that the reason crosses work on vampires regardless of their religious beliefs is becase waving geometric shapes in front of their face overloads their brain.

That is 100% stolen from the Sci-Fi novel Blindsight by Peter Watts.
In that novel vampires are an extinct but brought back species of humanoid predators, kinda like the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park.
They evolved to hunt humans and think in four spacial dimensions and what killed them is that they suffer a grand mal seizure when they see perfect right angles, which don't exist in nature.

They are just a footnote in the novel with only one character being one. The actual story is a first contact story and very good.
I have zero doubt they stole that reasoning from the book.

Exactly the reason. The cloned ones are put on what are basically heavy anyi-psychotics, preventing the seizures but also inhibiting their thinking.
One is put on the spaceship for the first contact to utilise its unique thinking. Pretty much all of the crew are mentally weird to increase the chance of at least one of them being able to communicate with the alien life forms in some way.

Again, good book. The vampire thing is sort of an odd curveball for a hard sci-fi novel but it's interesting.
