Re: Movie Thread
It's just not as good as the previous ones and plain lacks a lot of charm.
I think it never had a chance even if it was good. Old Indy looked a bit cheap in an expensive way, CS looked expensive in a cheap way.
It's a bit like how it would be difficult to make a genuine Film Noire today. It'll always feel off unless exceedingly well-executed. CS just wasn't.

The last decent Film Noir I remember was Brick, because it wasn't really film noir but a send-up of film noir from a high-schooler's perspective.
Film noir is one of those moods that has been lost to time and changing civilizations. We don't live the same way and culture isn't the same. The closest you have now is neo-noir aka cyberspunk.

That's something entirely different in mood and arguably also already outdated and overstaying it's welcome.
Cyberjunk 08/15 doesn't even have the same feel to it and neither does anything Shadowrun today. Systemshok 2 was the last hurrah and Y2K set the grave marker.
You can die your hair and gel them into liberty spikes but you'll never be punk.

I got to see Double Indemnity the other day with my dad. Man, what a razor sharp script and a perfect ending. Peak film noir.rabidtictac wrote: ↑Wed Jan 01, 2025 1:29 amThe last decent Film Noir I remember was Brick, because it wasn't really film noir but a send-up of film noir from a high-schooler's perspective.

I'd definitely love to hear your thoughts on it. You're probably the best movie critic on this shitposting forum.Kugelfisch wrote: ↑Wed Jan 01, 2025 3:35 amI've heard about it but never watched it. I'll check it out tomorrow.

Re: Movie Thread
You still have noir today. The main ingredient of noir is that it's a crime story with a pessimistic edge. Often, but not always, this translates into shadowy, stylish cinematography.
The men are losers, the women are bad news even if she's appealing at first (the femme fatale). Plans don't work out. Everything goes wrong. The (anti-) hero usually ends up dead or not getting what he wants. The pursuit of money will ruin you. Sex will ruin you. If you think things are going well, fate will step in and ruin you.
"Breaking Bad" is pretty noir. I don't see many new movies, but a recent-ish (more recent than "Brick") one that I liked a lot is "Blue Ruin".
Of the classics, my favorite noir is probably "The Big Heat" from 1953. Very dark, mean movie (and directed by Fritz Lang), though "Double Indemnity" is up there, too.

I'm not opposed to the idea of aliens in my Indiana Jones movie, but they did it too esoteric and weird. I want pulp aliens, not some weird transdimensional nonsense.
The terrible CGI car chase through the world's most spacious jungle. What's not to love?
(Though I admit it was a better sendoff to the character than Dial of Destiny)
