I watched the first season of Red Dwarf. It was alright. The main draw for me is the pathos of the two morons (well, one moron and a hologram pretending to be his dead superior) being trapped millions of years in the future. I think that's a really twisted bit of dark humour and the show occasionally leans into that. Whenever it goes for the dry sarcasm, it's quite funny.

Unfortunately, it also leans quite heavily into lighthearted slapstick (mainly personified by the weird Cat character, who adds nothing of substance) and just plain silliness, which is nowhere near as interesting.

I'd give it a 7 out of 10. The best I can say is that it's very watchable - the episodes go by quickly.

Red Dwarf is fabulous. It changed a lot in the 3rd season, mostly for the better. Kryten was a great addition to the show. But the female Holly isn't funny like the male one was.

But for God's sake, skip series 7 and 8. They are fucking godawful.

Plus, you get better context for what follows, both in-universe and behind the scenes

The second season was an improvement, although I miss how venomous Rimmer was in season 1. And the loss of Holly is just tragic. He was such a brilliant presence.

Seems like season 3 is a full-on reboot. Not sure how to feel about it yet
