Zombies were already getting on a bit by that point. The show didn't create the fad, it actually came in a bit late. 28 Days/Weeks Later, Dawn of the Dead (remake) and Zombieland all came out a few years before.
If anything, zombies were already becoming stale.

I always saw it as people into the show were just the extra lame normalfags that came way late to a dead trend and has extraordinary bad taste for it.

It's the same feeling of when a meme on its way out makes it into the normalfag space and the NPCs treat it as all the rage when really it's as dead as Millhouse.

Who got into zombies with TWD is the same person that buys rage comic t-shirts at HotTopic.

I like the independent spirit of all three movies. Land is terrible - yes, but there’s sort of a blue collar charm to the craft of the original Night and Dawn - and the gore FX on Day are magnificent stuff - that bummer ending hits hard.
