The same reasons people are communists. Jealousy, laziness, and the belief that anyone who has better life circumstances than you obviously either lucked or cheated their way into it and never had to deal with anything hard, because heaven knows you avoid anything hard and could never be successful unless you lucked/cheated your way into it (in Spoony's case, both).

As of 3/3.5 rules I was still forced to be Lawful Good if I wanted to roll my usual Paladin. There was Blackguard but even that required Lawful Evil and wasn't able to deviate.
