This is from before some here were born, but the one I think of first is Johnny Carson who was friends with Joan Rivers and then when she got her own (short-lived) late night show, he never spoke to her again.

I do think Letterman and Conan genuinely dislike Leno.

Carson had a tendency to gatekeep - the upside here is that you had a decade or so with late night hosts who understood they were the entertainment and not the rightthink.

That change is why these shows are all failing now - nobody can draw viewers on their own merit. This is most endemic by the current performance on the Daily Show - which is doing so poorly I wouldn’t be shocked if it got canceled soon.

Noah lost a solid 70% of Stewart’s viewers - the fact that Stewart is back on TV doesn’t help matters either lmao. Even a lot of liberals I know say they stopped watching when Jon left.

Letterman and Conan O'Brien's feuds with Leno were 100% real.

Two things that may not translate to younger generations (and maybe people outside the US)
1 - Late night talk shows used to be huge. Every famous boomer comedian has the same story of their career taking off after doing well on The Tonight Show. Overnight, they'd go from moderate fame to everyone knowing who they were.

2 - The Tonight Show was sacred to Letterman's generation. It was the top of the mountain in that world and Letterman took it badly when Leno got the job to replace Johnny Carson over him. Even Carson wanted Letterman to succeed him. Letterman left his network over it. It was big drama back in the day.

Today, none of that applies. The audience for these shows are smaller. I don't even know who watches them anymore. And The Tonight Show is thoroughly debased now and is nothing close to the big deal that it once was.

The result is that the new crop aren't all that competitive with each other. They know that this format is dying and they're just happy to have staked out whatever turf they've got.
