Westerns went out gracefully. Capeshit doesn't deserve a fond remembrance.

The Outlaw Josey Wales is one of my favorite movies - and it was post death.

Re: Capeshit thread (comics and movies)
Westerns never fully died. That would be very odd anyway, as, outside of some kind of special genre, they are period pieces at their core. There will always be stories that take place during the late 19th to early 20th century in the USA.
Likewise, I don't think that super hero stories will fully die either. But the current high production, CGI popcorn crap will vanish eventually. It'll be stuff like Super and other odd little indy films about oddballs that will remain.
The whole comic book super hero played straight thing is starting to get even niggercattle to lose interest. It's goofy shit with little to no self-awareness with less cultural importance than Pogs.

The Marvel and DC movie machines are like any other corporation. If McDonald's sales start to slip, McDonald's will try to fix it by doing something different, whether it's a new ad campaign or changing up the menu.
The DCEU is in the process right now of "changing the menu" with James Gunn. If Marvel's current path continues to lose peoples' interest (and I think it will), then they'll make sweeping changes, too. The people in charge of it will be replaced. Maybe they'll reboot the whole thing like the comics have done multiple times. The success of "Joker" shows that the audience for this stuff is open to alternate timelines for popular characters and doesn't find it confusing. So there's a lot they can try.

See, Joker isn't even capeshit. That's what I meant with the super hero kind of genre not vanishing entirely. Unironic capeshit will go, stories that pretty much just incidentally fall within the scope of the genre will stay.

The DCEU has been flailing around and trying all sorts of different shit ever since it started.Lindsay's Liver wrote: ↑Sun Apr 16, 2023 1:49 pmThe DCEU is in the process right now of "changing the menu" with James Gunn.
Autism attracts more autism. Sooner or later, an internet nobody will attract the exact kind of fans - and detractors - he deserves.

James Gunn(shot to the head) won't save shit. The DCEU failed & the capeshit boom is decaying.

They didn't fully die, but it became very difficult for a new western to get made. The 3:10 to Yuma remake had a troubled time finding funding specifically because studios heard "western" and tuned the fuck out.Kugelfisch wrote: ↑Sun Apr 16, 2023 12:04 pmWesterns never fully died. Sure, the occasional western is still made. The last notable one imo was Hateful Eight. But these tend to be more along the lines of "tribute movies" or "deconstructions" of the genre, rather than popcorn fare or casual blockbusters that play the tropes straight.
When you compare the percentage of westerns made to the amount of them that were decent, I'd say superhero movies are even worse than westerns at this point. The assembly line hasn't been running as long (as it did with westerns before the public burned out), but companies like Mahvul have been extremely prolific. Not to mention that most of the westerns that caused the death of the genre were merely mediocre or trite. Capeshit of comparable quality today are hailed as masterpieces.

TL;DR James Cameron must dive even deeper to find the bar. It gets lower every year.
As bad as DC's superhero movies suck (and they do,) I still find their slapdash approach more entertaining than Mahvul's "remake shitty joss whedon movie 1000 times" philosophy. The DCEU has been flailing around and trying all sorts of different shit ever since it started.
