They were never united. All caliphs were ethnic empires. Even today the same everlasting struggle of Arabs vs. Persians vs. Turks continues. The levant is a huge disaster zone because all three countries want some. Islam is the only thing uniting these people and they all practice Islam differently. Arabs are pompous backstabbers who see themselves as the true ethnic successors of Muhammad, Persians are still ass-blasted hillbilly desert people destroyed their Sassanid empire, an empire that could hold its self against Rome, and Turks are entitled pricks that think they have the inherent right to own the planet and kill everyone who are not Turk - i.e. Mongolians.
Muhammad would be sad if he was alive.
Muhammad died before Islam expanded into the north east. It was of internal debate after his death if they should expand Islam outside the Arab tribes, but at the end of the day, Abu Bakr knew Islam could only remain strong if they were perpetually fighting kefir and plundering the infidel.

My favorite part of that whole film is when some Muslim zealot damaged the power grid to Damascus and all the Arab tribes started fighting amongst each other, one Arab even having the gull to demand the British to fix their technology for them. Perfect analogy for the Arab line of thinking.
