They already kind of have. If you've ever seen Yellowstone, that's a Neo-Western in much the same way that Neo-Noirs came up after film noirs sort of died.

Then there's Alec Baldwin's shooting gallery if that ever sees the light of day.

Dunno what's stopping them, really. Brandon Lee getting shot during the filming of The Crow made that movie a cult classic.

And mark my words: Westerns will return.

That's been claimed many times. I remember when 3:10 to Yuma came out and everyone said "Westerns are reborn." Yeah, go read up on the process of how that film got made. It was a massive struggle. Primarily because nobody wants to give money to make westerns, still.

The odd western comes out every once in a while, like Hateful Eight (though it, like many of Tarantino's films, is more an homage to the genre than story unto itself). Or you'll have some normalfag show such as Justified which tries to be "western-like" while still conforming to cop drama tropes.

Point is, I've been around long enough to see "westerns are back" declared multiple times. It was never true. After the initial hype of that particular western died down, the genre went back into its long slumber. The genre itself is still dead. Various people have been trying to "revive" westerns since the '80s, if not earlier. Depends if you think Spaghetti Westerns were a revival attempt or not.

Making a good Western is too difficult today. Writers, actors, production and post production aren't geared towards that.

Even the more niche side of Hollywood that made There will be Blood or No Country for Old Men isn't going to make a proper Western anytime soon.
I don't think everything there is to be said in that genre is already told but they seem to think so.
