The attacks on the northern front were successful. They did push some elite Russian forces back, but it wasn't a complete rout, so the possibility of a counter-attack remains open. The southern front hasn't changed, which seems to be bad for the Russians considering winter is coming they have to defend with their backs to the Dniper river (or whatever that river is called), which is always a nightmare to provide logistics for. At the same time, they do have Europe in an energy vise and the economic warfare might prove to be successful were the conventional military hasn't been. Russia's economic team has been the best performing Russian asset to this date.

In any case, neither side is standing fine right now and eastern Ukraine is getting fucked into the ground.

Absolutely. Even if Ukraine manages to get Russia completely back to its own border (and that's already a big ask), they got absolutely screwed over. Future looks bleak no matter what.

Meanwhile...
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will address U.S. defense contractors later this month when he headlines the annual Future Force Capabilities Conference and Exhibition hosted by the National Defense Industrial Association (NDIA).

News of the Ukrainian president’s speech to the NDIA — whose membership includes defense industry giants like Raytheon Technologies, Lockheed Martin and General Dynamics — comes as Kiev looks to fend off Russia’s invasion as it drags through its sixth month.
Oh, what's that? Inflation is at its highest levels in US history? Sounds like the perfect time to restart the Cold War and Rev up the MIC! Mo money for dem HIMARS!

Yeah, the part that had me skeptical of news media reports was that Ugraine is still fighting a war within its own borders. The news cycle is treating this situation with a lot of optimism, but Russia still has the resources. I think the question is more whether or not Putin/Russian government is willing to fully mobilize for a war economy. For now, even withdrawals are happening within Ukraine, right? So it's just Ukrainian turf being torn up either way, win or lose.

That whole region of the world is being destabilized by knock-on effects related to both the war and supply chain problems previous to the war.

As far as anyone can tell, retreats are taking place within Ukraine's borders, yes.
Wouldn't be the first time they withdrew and came back. I thought WWII would've taught everyone that that's what Russia does.

One Königstiger would wipe out 30 Russian shitboxes easily. Problem was there was always a 31st. And another one. And another one.

Here's a bit of news that is completely and totally unrelated to my previous post.
The US State Department announced in August that it will no longer publish World Military Expenditures and Arms Transfers (WMEAT) reports, which have been released by the US government since the 1960s.

The WMEATs detail US global military spending, arms transfers, and related data for each country in the world. The 2022 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) included an amendment that repealed a 1994 provision requiring the State Department to publish a WMEAT each year.
The West is getting ready to drag this shit out for years. This is the next multi-decade conflict no matter what happens.
