Putin has said that NATO membership is a red line for a long time now. He picked now because the disastrous Afghan pullout showed America's weakness, because Biden is incredibly unpopular (both at home and abroad) and is looking to get a 'win' somewhere (and where better than to finish Obama's goal of getting Ukraine into NATO and the EU) and because Biden, the US President, has dealings in the country.
