Putin does not want to deal with a situation post-war where Ukrainians commit terrorist attacks against Russians or Russia itself. He prevents that by minimising damage to their country and minimising civilian deaths. Even the US has admitted the civilian death toll is something like under 1000

And yet the civilian death toll, according to UN figures, is only a little over 1000. Hardly consistent with them bombing 'plenty' of schools. The death toll in Kiev is no more than 300 people, do you know how many people live in Kiev?
