China is really the superior super villain these days. They actually have a huge economy that guarantees governments of any ideology will want to be on good terms with them. They are basically conquering the world by buying it, bit by bit.
Russia on the other hand is some kind of global schoolyard bully (which pisses everyone off), trying to conquer the world through threats and military force (which further pisses everyone off) and by propping up failing despots (which will only make the people and the opposition associate you with the regime, which in turn means any regime change is guaranteed to diminish your influence in the region because they've had enough of your shit).

Plus China is investing in foreign news agencies and shit, whereas Russia keeps pouring time and resources into a parallel world of propaganda news channels which for the most part only conspiracyfags fall for.

China is the big boss for sure because of all his economic ties all over the world, Russia from his point of view is just defending his territorial interest in this case even if economically lose in the short term.

What is in Russia's favour is that, while exaggerated to a good degree and also orchestrated to another, it's not just some propaganda meme that lots of Ukranians would rather be part of the Russian Federation.

They aren't sovereign anyway. Previously Soviet, right now CIA, soon likely Russian. It really hardly matters.
On its own, Ukraine is fucked in general. They need to be part of a bigger club, especially being so close to Russia. The only options are either being part of the EU and/or NATO or part of the Russian Federation. The West has left them hanging for the past few years. Just installed a Muppet, didn't do shit during the Crimean crisis and didn't even allow Ukranians as refugees.
