Perhaps Putin should consider transitioning if he wants to fuck himself that much.

The longer Putin takes to conquer Ukraine, the more likely he will be placed in an untenable position and forced into some peace treaty maymay. He can circumvent the economic sanctions and his oil will keep money coming in. But if he takes too long, Ukraine's neighbors may decide they've had enough and we might see some other countries declare war on him. If only to stop the flood of Ukrainian immigrants.

Ukraine has no chance of winning, from where I sit. But by prolonging the war, Putin will feel the pinch of economic sanctions. The rich oligarchs may turn on him too since he's hurting their shekels.

Just as Ukraine has no chance against Russia, Russia has no chance trying to wage war on the entire western world. It won't come to that if this war remains a conventional one, and especially not if Ukraine is taken too swiftly for other countries to mobilize or care. But the longer this goes on and the more Putin escalates... If he drops a nuke, he is fucked. What place will be safe for the man who started world war 3? Even his own countrymen will kill him.

That said, this shit is pretty scary, because it looks like Putin is standing alone and with less and less to lose. How many nukes could he launch before the end?

Don't be so sure, autismo cat. Of course if Putin presses the button, Russia will be obliterated. But do you want to get obliterated in return? Billions will die, not only from nukes and their consequences to Earth's biome, but also because of the complete breakdown in infrastructure. It may seem farfetched, but these idiots in charge are seriously gambling with that possibility, and they're reckless enough that they don't care. Virtue signalling about muh democracy (a concept the Western world is slowly but surely destroying anyway) while they escalate things further, because they're sure Putin will not dare to press the button. Bullshitting about "heroic resistance" in a one-sided conflict that presents no hope for the Ukrainian people (the real victims of this aggression and of their own madness, for electing a literal dumb clown as President).

Who knows where this will end? Today we're trying to reassure ourselves that a nuclear apocalypse isn't possible, that cool heads will prevail in the end, just like last time in 2014, no one will dare. But there's no way to really tell, now there is? You could argue that this is true even when there's no war involving nuclear powers, that one day Biden or Xi or Macron could wake up and decide they had enough and a nuclear apocalypse is a good way to go. But the odds of that happening are basically non-existent, while this shitshow turning into the worst is a possibility we definitely can't even approximate the odds of.

Don't know about you, but I'm definitely afraid. Sure we aren't at the same threat level of the Cuban Missile Crisis, but that definitely isn't a relief, all things considered.

I agree with autism cat, turn off the news.

Nuclear weapons were not invented last year. Russia has had them since 1949 and despite several military actions since then and the actual fall of the USSR, they've never launched one in a conflict.
Russia isn't going to nuke anyone over Ukraine being a hassle for a month. The official line from Moscow is still that this is a "limited police action". The goal isn't to annex the country or be a permanent occupying force or genocide the civilian population, it is to turn Ukraine into Belarus.
On the other side, the West isn't willing to stop Russian fuel imports and they rejected the idea of having a no-fly zone over Ukraine, so they aren't going to declare war or launch a counter-invasion.

If Russia continues on and invades Poland or Romania or the Baltics countries then you can get worried.

France is starting to seize oligarch assets.
The Silicon Valley is starting to cancel Russian media.
Foreign journalists for Russian media are starting to quit because they're not allowed to mention the war.
Even the Orthodox church is starting to get miffed.

If I am allowed to sound a bit crazy, I think this is all a combined effort of the 1% to finally put an and to Putin and his shekel-disrupting shenanigans.

You do realize that Belarus has a permanent occupying force? The citizens are so tired of Little Putin that he might not survive the next round of scripted elections without Russian forces protecting the status quo. He even gave his OK to station Russian nuclear warheads in his country, just so Putin will give him another couple years on his throne.
