The longer this shit drags around, the higher the chance of some nonsense escalating things up to a direct conflict with Russia - which they already basically turned into a pariah state with little to lose anyway, so who knows what they'll do. Won't lie, shit is becoming scarier by the hour.

I don't think that will happen. Not only Putin is ex-KGB (so, he has vast experience with the playbook on "getting rid of undesirable head of state"), Russia's economy is just big enough that the oligarchs will be able to keep a good chunk of their own wealth and power despite sanctions.

I think Cicero's words to the Senate on Rome reflect well how Putin and his Russia should be treated:

Currently the west is pulling a Catho and threatening Cesar with the most severe sanctions and economic ruin and sending materiel for Ukraine to put up a hopeless fight that they cannot and will not win, because of moral obligations. Fine, but that won't make cool heads prevail and bring them to any sort of negotiating table in the near future, which seems to me the opposite of what's in everyone's best interests. The result may be Cesar's legions marching over the Rubicon Polish border because he has nothing to lose anyway.
