HL2 was The Orange Box, right? I never played Valveshit myself, was always more of an Unreal Tournament nigger.

I remember playing Portal and having some fun with the puzzles, then Portal 2 happened and it the deep lore and worldbuilding started to seriously get on my nerves.

The Orange Box came later with TF2. HL2 marked the start of Steam and for CS that meant the pile of shit that was 1.6, no offline LAN and the end of WON IDs.

HL2 only sold because they bundled it with Counter Strike and you had to get it to be able to play CS. As a singeplayer FPS it was really meh, the only good thing wasn't the game itself but the engine.

Yet for the next few years douchey PC gamers claimed it was the best FPS ever made and wouldn't be topped for decades. They also claimed Crysis was a masterpeice and yet hardly anyone talks about the gameplay of the first game anymore, the only legacy that game has is for it's insane spec requirements for the time which to me signalled the death of that era of PC gaming and a change was needed.

I must be the only person who liked Crysis. Even so, I can't deny it was a benchmarking tool for PCs. Crysis 1 was still the best game made with "Cry" in the title by that studio, however.

The fuck are you guys going on about? CS: Source is stand alone and nobody ever bought HL2 for CS. CS:Source wasn't even a thing when HL2 came out.
