It used to be that, many many moons ago, you had to compete in your mother tongue. But then everyone wanted to move away from folk shit in order to make generic radio pop shit instead, so everyone and their mother started singing in English beause that's just what generic radio pop shit is sung in.
Many countries have mellowed out since, letting their candidate sing in whatever language they want. Germany on the other hand, being the Internet Nobody of the ESC, never learns form its mistakes and keeps insisting on quirky English pop shit.
