I tried out Koi Koi Hanafuda recently and it's surprisingly much easier to understand than it looks and is very fun.

Nah, not even close. It's more like Poker, I guess. You match the 8 cards on your hand with open ones on the table and try to build a winning hand.
Think of it as a way, way less complicated version of Riichi Mahjong.

You can learn the rules in five minutes. You only need to learn the winning hands and get used to the cards themselves but that's also less complicated than it looks. It's a pretty casual game.
