My point was that racial tensions hardly matter but economical strife does. How those tensions not going away, tensions the powers intentionally stoke, is relevant is what I'm asking.

Point is, as long as the government doesn't directly earn the ire of a population, people are mostly fine with being part of a nation instead of being independent, even if the dominant population of that nation is of a differing ethnicity.

They either do well and don't much care or they don't do well but the state can slap down any uprising.
Current examples for the former would be Scottland before Brexit and for the latter Taiwan.
But extreme poverty, to the point of the latter failing because the military personell are included in the suffering group because the state is dead broke, that's when shit falls apart. No sooner is that the case.

Normies will tolerate most anything except instability. They'll even tolerate a certain amount of hardship and squalor. But they won't tolerate instability to the point of their money becoming worthless or food impossible to find.
