The funny thing about season 4 is that it was originally the ending. I agree that it would've been a bad one. That doesn't make season 5 any good. 4 should just have had a better ending.

By that logic, every season after 2 should've been 'the ending'. AMC threatened to cancel it in season 3, and only the fact that FX wanted to buy it convinced them to make season 4. And then the show exploded in popularity on Netflix, which again convinced them to make season 5.

But the only season specifically written to conclude the series is 5, and that's obvious just from watching the show. The finales of 3 and 4 were made to potentially close things off purely because that's how television writing works in general. You can't rely on coming back. 5 is when they decided 'right, we're saying we're not gonna make any more and we're gonna give these characters the best send-off we can'.

They can't just kill off a character and start over, so they have to keep coming up with bigger and goofier plots until everything's like a live-action cartoon.
