I watched the first season of Breaking Bad and it would've been good except the pace is fucking glacial. Does it pick up a bit or was I right to skip it?

After rewatching Id put the seasons in this order from good to bad:
3 > 4 > 2 > 1 >>>>> 5

Id say finish season 2 and if you arent hooked by then its not for you. Skip 5 though its garbage and ruins every character.

Season 3 is literally the "waiting for the show to figure out what it wants to do next" season, without much conflict or plot progression until Walt rams down the dealers.

meanwhile, season 5 literally has everything one would want the show to do... Walt vs Hank, Walt vs Jesse, Walt as the drug lord he was always trying to be and becoming the show's villain.

This is like having Space Seed and the Wrath of Khan, and throwing away Wrath of Khan because technically Space Seed concluded something. Who does that?

Lots of nonsense about Breaking Bad here. The series, of course, could not have ended in the fourth season, it would have left everything open. BB could have ended no earlier than at the episode Ozymandias, which was the true ending of the story anyway. The two final episodes function as an epilogue, they were the only ones that could have been cut off.

The third season is also not the worst in the series. The S1 is clearly the worst, the stage when BB was still searching for itself. The S2 was not yet the best in the series either, too much back and forth between the main characters, are we going to go into this meth business or not, and all that whole silly plane crash shit that didn't fit in the series at all.

From the third season onwards, the series was full rock n'roll and continued at the same level until the end. My only gripe with the seasons 3-5 was that Walt never tasted his own product! It would have been a great ending to the series if Walt had finally snorted a line at the moment of his death.

I do kinda like the lowkey dark comedy feel of season 1, and the confrontation with Tuco is a nice climax. Seasons 2-3 are a bit iffy, because it doesn't feel like Walt or Jesse are in much danger at any point. In season 1, they have nothing, and in 4-5, they're constantly in conflict.

S1 isn't bad, all other seasons are just better. There certainly was some good dark comedy in it. I remember when I started watching the series and was wondering what this really is? Is this supposed to be a comedy?
