You have to understand that Cline, much like that hack writer of Dildo Art Online, isn't nearly as well-versed in the source material that he's bravely speculating about as he and his fans would like to admit.
His self-insert protagonist (at least in the book) always assumes that whoever he's meeting online always uses an avatar that looks just like the real deal, and he's proven correct time and time again. It's just with his waifu that he suddenly has doubts, just to add in some artificial tension.
