The thing is we've had longer and more violent riots in the US before but I don't think there's ever been an instance where the media and a lot of the government was on the side or the rioting and looting. They see violent unrest as a necessary side effect of calls for racial justice even though they are fucking in charge in a lot of these places.

Yeah, the late 1960s were ridiculous and the 1970s weren't much better. And back then a 20+ body count wasn't rare. Say what you want about Reagan's immigration policies but he restored and maintained order quite well.

He was no longer learning how to stop Tank charges in the Fulda gap, but instead how to contain and control civilian populations at home. This is kind of the problem, here. It is up to the governors to take care of their own backyards. Really the federal government should only have to deal with upholding the constitution and foreign affairs. But people will always look at the president as a kind of monarch.

I really think a lack of action harms him more. Even dead George Bush was willing to take things over in '92 when CA showed that they were inept. At the very least Trump should secure federal property in Washington and show people how it's done.
He's spent the entire year getting cowed by doctors and governors and media optics. This is the first time I've thought he could really lose to oatmeal brain Biden. I'll vote for him no matter what because the alternative is getting flayed in the town square but I don't think it is looking good.
