Honestly who gives a fuck, so long as they can do the accent? There's not much difference between a Brit and American, so long as they can sound convincing I really don't care. Christian Bale's English but you'd never know it because his American accent is flawless. Likewise, I don't really care about Americans playing Brits so long as they can actually do the accent and not that vague, fake received pronunciation thing they think we do.

I'm much more bothered by black actors playing white characters.

I don't see what's so hard about just making the character the actual nationality of the actor. That might not work for all historic movies but especially when something takes place in the USA you can always go with the immigrant angle. It's not like anyone's going to wonder how someone from another English-speaking nation ended up in America.

You want to know a weird one? In Greystoke, (a movie Michael Jackson must've worn out all his VHS copies of) they hired Andie MacDowell to play Jane. She has a Southern accent and they knew this when she was hired. The character was written as American, but they dubbed her over with Glenn Close. American characters can't be Southerners for some reason?
