Re: "Cartoons"
That’s because ((Sugar))) let’s her storyboard artist draw the characters in their own style. John K did that on Ren and Stimpy, but he also had very detailed layouts.Moe Bitches wrote: ↑Sun Mar 29, 2020 7:31 pmNow even though that show's art style isn't bad, there's worse out there that I've seen, it goes off model quite a lot and the behind the scene stuff is just really odd.

Please don't compare the CalArts crew with people who actually know what they're doing.
Autism attracts more autism. Sooner or later, an internet nobody will attract the exact kind of fans - and detractors - he deserves.

Re: "Cartoons"
Ren and Stimpy's animation was great for television quality animation. From what I heard and what little I've seen while it looks okay in stills, but in motion not so much. Plus the only time the animation really shines is that Rubberhose thing from the movie. Otherwise it's just ok. It's not bland like those flash animated Cucknadian imported shows but it's not nu-Spongebob tier.

I'd like to stop you and disagree heavily with that. It's beyond basic and not in a good way. I could draw SU no problem and I can't draw for shit.

That's some real talk. The quality of burger animation has declined so much in the past decades.Kugelfisch wrote: ↑Mon Mar 30, 2020 1:29 amI'd like to stop you and disagree heavily with that. It's beyond basic and not in a good way. I could draw SU no problem and I can't draw for shit.
At this point the 1970s-era Ruby-Spears cartoons look like modern art pieces in comparison.

Re: "Cartoons"
You just gotta look in the right places. 1970s-era Ruby-Spears just had limited animation (but that Megaman show can fuck right off) but otherwise it looked appealing. The whole minimalist art style works for some shows, but ffs when you have shows that look exactly the same it's sad really.
Like when I look at Genndy Tartakovsky's work, which is part of what inspired my artstyle (especially Dex and Titan) you can tell that the same guy directed the animation but each show has it's own unique style.
But of course an example of shows that look exactly the same would be FG/AD/CS and especially Brickleberry and Paradise P.D. These shows practically have the same look.
But I agree that most cartoons have that minimalist look to it, but not in a good way. At least those UPA cartoons were doing something creative/interesting with their limited budget.

Re: "Cartoons"
Minimalist doesn't have to be bad. But in the case of SU especially it just plain is. Of all the CalARTS kinda shows it's easily the worst-looking, not only from a pure craft kind of standpoint but also in terms of overall art style.
Adventure Time, Regular Show and Gravity Falls all look better and more coherent. Fucking South Park has more of a coherent art style!

You can thank union organizers like Herbert Sorrell for that. And take a wild guess as to who funded these unions.Tony Schiavone wrote: ↑Mon Mar 30, 2020 2:01 am

In 1953, in an actor's lawsuit Sorrell testified that while he was never a communist, he did feel free to spend their money.
