Fencing's not French though. Neither is Picard, really, but that's a separate argument
It's at least a bit associated with France over here, what with the Three Musketeers 'n' shit. There's also Zorro for your other swashbuckling needs, but most Krauts probably don't even know where that bloke is even from.

Also Picard has a French name, has French parents and was born in France. Also I just read that Star Trek France is primarily speaking English because French has fallen out of favor. Didn't know Star Trek was Science Fantasy :|

Yes, the original conception of the character is French. But, the actor is English, the character enjoys drinking Earl Grey tea, Shakespeare and singing Royal Navy songs. These are all things associated with the English.

Rewatched the 2009 film on a whim, and whilst it's a bit overly dramatic, I still really enjoy it. The new cast members acquit themselves nicely(particularly Pegg and Yelchin as Scotty and Chekov respectively) and it's a lovely swan song for Leonard Nimoy's Spock.
It's a shame that I didn't really enjoy Into Darkness or Beyond, because the film does a great job of setting up the rebooted era. I hope the fourth film will be more solid.

My main criticism is that it's absurd for Kirk to just go from Cadet to Captain, or even acting first officer. Why does Pike promote him to that position at all? All he did was provide some valuable intel.

That reminds me of that one time Data called French outdated and Picard chewed his head off

Sounds like something Wesley would've said, too.

The impression I got from the movie is that Pike gave him constant unwarranted special treatment because he and Kirk's dad were BFFs.

Picard is a Britaboo, same way a lot of Federation blokes have a hard-on for Baseball stars from a couple centuries ago.

Now that I think about it, it's kind of weird that Pike is already so old. He was definitely way closer to Kirk's age in TOS. Maybe not 20s, but definitely no older than early 30s.

I get that The Cage takes place some years before the rest of the series, but still.

That would explain why his dad and brother beat the shit out of him so much.

My biggest problem with JJ Trek was officer Spock fucking a cadet who clearly had him by the balls and could easily coerce him into breaking rules.

That and the godawful action scenes. That shaky-cam drill fight is one of the worst-shot pieces of filmmaking in motion picture history.

Do katanas even count under fencing? Original Sulu had a rapier, hence... fencing.
