Keith is right. Viacom split both companies from each other thus splitting up Star Trek in the process. So it's a convuluted mess.

• Viacom split into CBS and a new company that uses the name Viacom (which includes Paramount), and were split when STD and the new Picard show were created.
• Paramount licensed Star Trek from CBS to make the Gay-Gay-Gay no Gaybrams Star Trek movies.
• CBS retains all licensing rights for "real" (non JJ) Star Trek. In order for JJ's company to get money from licensing, it has to be significantly different from the real Star Trek. An artist on STD said he was told to make that show's Enterprise design "25% different". That's where the 25% figure comes from. If it's not 25% different, CBS gets the money from the merchandise instead of JJ. (The artist's post where he states this was quickly taken down, but it was too late; fans had seen everything.)
• Some companies made merchandise based on the new fake Star Trek, but nobody wanted to buy it. Licensees now want nothing to do with this fake shit that nobody wants to buy, so the whole purpose of the 25% different stuff is now moot.
• Les Moonves was in charge of CBS and reportedly hated Star Trek and had no interest in it, so he hired the retards that made the JJ movies ("Secret Hideout") and let them make a series.
• Moonves was "MeToo'ed" and ousted, but CBS is stuck with his stupid contract with Secret Hideout.

Ok
assuming that the artist didn't just misinterpret his orders as being for legal reasons rather than artistic ones, this still wouldn't make Discovery fake Trek if it's just a matter of visuals having to look slightly changed.

I feel like people just latched onto this idea to denounce Discovery and played a game of telephone to trump up the significance, if it had any to begin with.
