I thought it was mentioned during the DS9 crossover. I remember Bashir meeting Data and somehow it came out. But of course at the time, they couldn't predict nostalgia culture would demand aging actors to play their parts perpetually.

That's the most sobering thing about my rewatching Trek.
Most of the actors from TNG are in their 60s and those from TOS are in their 80s.

Shatner was never big-time Hollywood. He's beloved for Star Trek and some other stuff but generally speaking he's not, say, Johnny Depp levels of fame.
