I seem to recall New Line going through this dilemma back in 2004 when the Lord of the Rings run finally ended. They were looking for a way to keep the money spigot running. They floated the idea of making all original sequels not based on anything Tolkien had written.
I assume that will happen here as well, but it won't be as big of deal since the show has already gone way past anything George "The Spoony One" Martin will ever get written anyway.

Dunno about sequels. I think they're doing prequels because that's the hip trendy thing in Hollywood now (thank you George fucking Lucas). Everything has to have a prequel. The Hobbit? No, it's Lord of the Rings prequel trilogy now. Even The Thing got a fucking prequel
