One of my closest friends who I've known for 12 years is a communist. Not even a regular communist, a Stalinist.

The problem with this is, my family is from the Eastern Bloc, Poland on my father's side and Lithuania on my mother's. My great-grandfather's cousin was a Leninist hunter arrested, condemned to death, and shot in Irkutsk. My great-grandfather himself was an "accursed soldier" (the name given to members of the Polish resistance by the Soviets) and associated with two men who attacked a Soviet van and killed 6 members of the Red Army Choir. He was going to be sent to the gulag, but he managed to escape back to America.

I told my friend this story and he said my great-grandfather was obviously a horrible person. Nobody in my family was a kulak or remotely wealthy. We're descendants of Russian serfs who ran away to freedom in Poland. They resisted the Soviets because they were destroying their homeland.

But I can't even argue with him because he's well-read and also very arrogant, so he runs circles around me in any kind of political debate.

Have you tried, you know, not being his friend? That is an option.

All communism did was dramatically lower the living standards for everyone while swapping a few of the old bluebloods for new, communist versions.

I have heard some of them bring up the Space Race and how in Russia it brought industrialisation. So yeah they have a point, Communism is better than a really shitty Monarchy run by an incompetent idiot son who only inherited it by birth but that's about it. The rest of the world was going through the industrial revolution while in Russia they still lived like the middle ages so any type of push towards it was going to be better. If they had embraced modernised capitalism they would have achieved it anyway but without all the commie baggage.

As for the Space Race, sure they were ahead of America at one point but in every other way they were fucking worse than the yanks and lived a much lower standard than they did. Just like how China today fakes their GDP numbers the Russians lied about how shit the country was and showed foreigners the best parts of it while hiding all the poverty in the 50s.

The thing with socialist based governments is that in the short term they are better than capitalism but in the long run they completely go to shit. At one point Best Korea wasn't just a meme, initially it actually was a better place to live than the South but by the 1980s North Korea was a complete shithole while South Korea was doing brilliantly. And look at Venezuela, many socialist academics were praising it and John Pilger made a propaganda film in the mid 2000s praising Hugo Chavez but look at it now. It had a good 15 year run but now it's completely gone. When capitalism fails it can bounce back, when socialism fails people starve. That's what happens when you live on someone else's money.

The only reason China has lasted is because they have slowly embraced more and more capitalism. When they went full commie under Mao 10's of millions starved.

Even a lot of shitlibs I knew at university didn't defend Stalin. Maybe some of the later ones, but not Stalin. He was every bit as much a dictator as Adolf. Just a different ideology which didn't end up being all that different.
