Swordquest was his best AVGN and he doesn't say fuck, use shit jokes, or have his unfunny friends play a wacky character.

I thought the best part of AVGN was when he wasn't buddy buddy with the audience. In the early reviews he was just angry, angry at everything including the viewers. Then it became stale. "You don't want me to play this do you? Oh, alright." The Double Vision reviews were probably the last night James said a legitimate sounding "Fuck you" to the viewer.

The anger and profanity sounds a lot more forced and fake than his earlier videos. I'd probably enjoy his new shit a lot more if he dialed down the act.

I also prefer the Mellow Game Nerd. The cursing just feels like he's doing it out for tradition's sake. It's like he's just going through a list of random curses or something.

In the early episodes, it was legit pent-up rage at shitty games he got swindled in to buying in his childhood.
I think many people, including myself, have had the exact same childhood experience, which is why he caught on.
The swearing seemed natural then.

But then he ran out of infuriating games from his childhood and was just taking requests from his audience. At that point, he was just acting. I now prefer his informative videos, like the Swordquest one.

The swearing didn't make him great in the early days, it was the bullshit design of some of those games that were blatantly cheap or had weird design where you had to backtrack and do 5 tasks for no real reason. He really ripped into the bad design of the games back then which made his rage far more natural.
