I would agree, the main issue now is that the people who ramble about games being art these days are pretentious asswipes who make hipster indie garbage. That and many devs are using the "I am making art, it's storytelling, it's not a game it's an experience" excuse to justify their shitty gameplay or lack thereof. Gameplay mechanics in general have gotten worse in games lately while they try too hard to be 2deep4u stories, which has lead to a backlash of people hating games being art because it means shit gameplay.

Of course, it is possible to make a great game with a great story as well if you know what you are doing. But with game dev tools becoming easier to use, more hacks with English degrees or former film people are making games without knowing how to design proper game mechanics. And because of that, people who hate games as art and people who like it now believe that storytelling and gameplay quality is a zero sum game.



Fez is a prime example of a game with shitty gameplay trying too hard to be art. When you tell people games should be art, they hear that you want everything to be Fez.

Well, that's the situation - most of the video games do not aspire to be an art piece, in fact I absolutely agree that you need to be sure what you're doing and if the gameplay is sufficient before you start thinking about other aspects of the media, but I will always argue that it's perfectly possible. Just because the industry is still young and filled with a lot of assholes doesn't mean video games can be dismissed completely as something that cannot be art. A lot of them simply aren't, but there is a difference between arcade shooter and something that touches you as an inspiring experience that you can remember same way as a movie or a book.

I'd say the closest to art would be Team Ico games, but they're still games first and foremost. Vanillaware games might count as well if art just has to be pretty for you.

But mostly, "It's art" has become the video game equivalent to "It's just for kids" when some hack is phoning it in.

2 reasons on why it it isn't. First, if eveything is art then nothing is and second, art is self-defining, you don't need to have a wanker point at a Last of Us and screaming that it is art. Art is in itself and so far people need to defend their burden of proof.
