But the nail in the coffin was YouTube not wanting people to profit from others misery, so demonetized a shit ton of it.

We've only been saying it for at least six years. BLIP BLIP BLIP and now YOUTUBE YOUTUBE YOUTUBE. And those are the "smart" ones, the ones who saw the writing on the wall in the first place and made the switch when it became obvious to everyone YouTube was the future. But now they've tied their livelihoods in with this company that isn't employing them and doesn't owe them anything, certainly not a single speck of job security, considering they're not even technically employed.

Living off youtube ads is like freelance contracting, except without any contract, goals or direction. You make shit, give it to youtube, they put it on their website and give you some of the money from the ads IF they feel like it (IE if you didn't violate copyright, if you can prove you own the content, if your channel is in good standing, etc.)
