I watched the first two Rocky films for the first time.

Rocky 1 was pretty fantastic, and I love how much it oozes the 1970s with the trashy streets, the lackadaisical pacing/dialogue, even that yellow Columbo font.

Rocky 2 was solid and still had a lot of heart, but lost that magic. I also felt the way they reintroduced Apollo was contrived. I wish they had spent more time together instead. Like maybe Rocky and him become friends and hang out, but then both get jealous of each other's lives (Apollo has money, Rocky has a loving family) and become unable to move on from the match.

Instead, Apollo is basically rewritten from the end of the first film and becomes inexplicably obsessed.

Paulie can go fuck himself. In both movies. He's only tolerable because he's Burt Young.

Black Bag was great. Michael Fassbender and Cate Blanchett are two MI6 agents, Blanchett is suspected of getting access to a program that can cause nuclear meltdowns to sell to the Russians.

What follows are a shitton of double crosses, closer to a George Smiley story, except totally original. Winds up playing like an Agatha Christie novel in Spy movie makeup. Perhaps a spoiler, but its written like if REANN Johnson was actually good at subverting your expectations.

Finally saw Predator from cover to back. Had always been on cable, so I'm pretty sure I saw it all out of order, but this is a full viewing.

It plays as camp these days, and I feel like if I saw it in 1987, I would have thought it was pretty campy then, too. Not at all a bad movie, in fact its mostly quite good. Just inferior to Die Hard.

We never needed any Rocky sequels, but I do enjoy how ridiculous they get as they go on. Stallone's ego was out of control in the 80s.

I read Quentin Tarantino's book, "Cinema Speculation", and I related to how his mom took him to so many R-rated movies as a kid. Mine did the same thing and one of those movies I saw was "Predator" in its original release. Good times. I still remember the room exploding in laughter when Arnold said "You're one ugly motherfucker" to the alien.

"Black Bag" looks good.

David Koepp wrote the script, who I recognize is a hit and miss kind of guy.

He's still writing the Jurassic Park sequels, and I imagine he just gets handed the job and has to make something salvageable. Talent can only go so far when you're seven movies into a franchise that should have only been one film. And then there's Indiana Jones' 4 and 5. Crystal Skull's big problem is Spielberg phoned that director job in, and I'd be shocked if the original script for Dial is what made it into the movie.

That all having been said, the script for "Black Bag", free of IP, you really get to see Koepp at his best. Despite being 95 percent dialogue the thing moves.

And I should talk about Tarantino's book, I saw an interview with him on Jimmy Kimmel where he spends 5 minutes heavily implying his love for black bulls. It really puts a lot into context.

The first chapter talks about him mum loving black men no joke and the final chapter is about one of the black men. Rest of the book is about movies and it’s great.

And I don't know, I read his passage about Taxi Driver where he was saying the pimps Travis was killing should've been black, and I really came away from that thinking he totally missed the point of that climax.

The point is the viewer is left in a state of discomfort, but a lack of sure footing as to what to think. On one end, this is a clear sign of Travis's mental deterioration; on the other, the men he's killing have it coming.

Making them all black clearly denotes what you should feel. If you're a DHI poster, its unrepentant glee - if you're a normie, you feel 100% uncomfortable.
