More! More queer!

The Great Escape.
I watch this every five years or so. I continue to love it and think it's still a perfect model of big, fun, escapist "blockbuster"-style filmmaking even over sixty years later.
That said, it could NOT be made today. A movie that depicts captivity in a German POW camp in WWII as an exciting adventure full of wisecracks would be unthinkable. I looked up some contemporary reviews and even the many positive ones often take a moment to apologize for it as an unrealistic depiction of the real horrors of war, which is like apologizing for Indiana Jones movies because they aren't accurate depictions of what archeologists do.
.
It's a movie. Of course it's unrealistic. People used to be more willing to go with that. Maybe we know too much today for that.
EDIT: While reading recent reviews, I also learned something that I didn't know, which is that in the UK "The Great Escape" is remembered as a holiday tradition. Apparently, British television showed it every Christmas for some decades. I like that.

Holiday traditions are fucking weird. Just look at Glorious Krautland with Dinner for One.

Or apologizing for the evils of Lovecraft as you are blundering his creative ideas.

Any show that had a guest appearance in the 60s Batman show can't be that bad.

There are also zero women in "The Great Escape". It's all guys being dudes and joking and getting into motorcycle chases.
I don't think we're allowed to have movies like that anymore.
