Not only that, but I've learned very quickly that you can't trust whatever former employees have to say about their previous place if it's extremely negative.

Yes, there are super shit places to work for. But if someone shows up with seven past employers in the last two years in the same area, guess who's the problem!

Imagine leaving a place over a decade ago and instead of a funny anecdote that you chuckle about it's your main thing to complain about that place and you're still extremely asshurt over it.

I once literally shovelled shit at the end of an 18 hour shift that I didn't even got paid for for those last hours as they fell out of my work time and I "technically" could've called it a day, but not at all practically.

Sure, I quit immediately the next day and I don't have much good to say about the place if one inquires. But I'm not a tenth as mad about that shit as these idiots are over....well, what even?

That was a different day. Still can't recommend. The day I mentioned earlier I started working at 4 and shoveled shit at around 21:30.
No, it's not part of the job in any reasonable company. Yes, I could've called it a day earlier. In much the same way that you could just quit a walk home in a snowstorm midway and lay down in the nearest hedge instead.

I'd eat at Applebee's for a month straight before I'd do that again.

And just to press this home, this was four years ago. I have told that story perhaps four people in total, including my parents, and I've only ever mentioned the company when directly asked.

Not to protect them! They can get totally fucked and I'd always advise anyone against them for a damn good reason.
But I'm also glad I did it. You don't know how good you have it if you've never experienced how unbelievably shit you can have it.

The few very mildly unpleasant tasks I do every few months now for a few minutes are a damn vacation by comparison.
Perhaps I would've always considered going for a small company in what would appear to be a much easier job.
Now I know better that my current job at a large company is actually more comfortable, interesting and even far better paid.

But I always would've wondered had I not accidentally gone for the super shit version first.
I would've been a gardener thinking retail would be some much easier, not knowing how much better being a gardener is.
