Reviving an old icon as a sad, broken man whom the movie burdens with a need to redeem himself, often through sacrificing himself, has become a modern cliche. Luke Skywalker, Indiana Jones, Michael Keaton's Batman (in "The Flash").

It happens enough that there's something to this, as in it reflects something in the culture. Maybe we're more pessimistic about aging than ever. It might also be a criticism of the "patriarchy" (your male heroes will fuck up everything in time).

Someone smarter than me will have to analyze that someday.

On the other hand, since "Dial of Destiny" and "The Flash" bombed pushing this message and "The Last Jedi" was, while not a bomb, the start of the commercial decline of "Star Wars", maybe they don't reflect something "in the culture" (not in the mainstream of it, at least), but something that Hollywood at least THINKS that people want.

Both franchises have done older characters in the past without making them broken faggots or unrealistic action stars (Yoda and ObiWan for Star Wars and Sean Connery in Indiana Jones). The Batman cartoons also handled aging characters better.

Mainly referring to Toph and Zuko in Korra -and the development that Aang is hinted to have received in the years after TLA.

Show shit the bed on Sokka, and Katara didn’t get enough to do, but those first two it kind of nailed.

That's actually a great idea! In all actuality they should've made Indy a James Bond or Dr. Who character with changing actors but if one must have Harrison Ford be Indy to get old and die your suggestion would be the perfect in-character death.

She grew up under controlling parents who wouldn't even let her go outside, so she overcorrected. She was excessively laissez faire with her own kids and free wheeling in her sexual life. Those are realistic flaws that you see frequently with people.
