If you think that he would get the same views just doing a video like a normal adult human being, you have no idea what kind of audience is watching him. Stop trying apply common sense here.

Douche has sold his soul to make shitty videos for morons, ironically crowd of similar intelligence such as Adam Sandler's audience, which he made fun of, and these people need "quirky" characters (translate for normal person as obnoxious and unfunny) to occupy their tiny minds with something while they're watching. The sad little man is one walking bag of irony, because for quite a while now, he is manifastation of what he used to make fun of.

You think his audience is watching him for his wit, originality or comedic timing? It's garbage product for garbage human beings produced by delusional fuckwit. Which is seriously perplexing to me. Nobody, absolutely nobody, cares about Mike Michaud. Not only is YT more important now than their main site, they fucked their visitor numbers when they switched the name to Channel Awesome. The Walkers don't need Michaud in any capacity. I would've abandoned the guy a long time ago.

Supposedly Michaud owns the Nostalgia Critic character. Take that with a huge grain of salt, though, because it's just something that's been spread around for awhile. I guess it would make sense then why the Walkers haven't gone anywhere. Either that, or they really are best pals with Mike, which makes me think less of the Walkers, because Mike has publically shown that he's a cunt.

I think there was a contract they signed or something where anything the Walkers make is immediately Michaud's. He has full control of everything and will fire you if you try to go against him. And they can't make anything outside of CA because their user base is entirely there, nor would Michaud ever let them advertise a side project.

As for NC, unfortunately for Doge, nothing he ever did took off in the same way the Critic did. After Demo Reel and Pop Quiz Hotshot, I'd say there's no chance he's ever going to try moving to some other project.
