Joss Whedon quipping is just a small part of the bigger picture.
Generally, modern movies obsess with being more "serious", and having "deep" characters.

It's either Whedon or Snyder. There's no in-between

The Fast and the Furious movies seem to have embraced their inner schlock. John Wick, too.

DHI is proof you can be both a massive homosexual and a virgin. They're not exclusive. If you display both in large enough quantities you can qualify for mod status.

Into Darkness was atrocious - I don't see what the issue with Beyond is beyond edgelord 'everything is terrible' spergation. Not as huge a reliance on "things you know" as the other movies or Picard, good pace - cast is good.
Justin Lin is a better director than Abrams, but so is everybody. It had a lower budget so there's a whole lot of wandering around on a shitty backwater planet.
Granted, I’m not an encyclopedia of Trek knowledge - but a Trek thing having no budget whatsoever seems pretty on brand.

I’ll grant that the villain was pretty forgettable.

I watched The Father(the 2020 one with Anthony Hopkins). I'd seen the play, so I knew it was gonna be good and, well, yeah. It was a pretty straightforward adaptation. The only omission I noticed was a bit of dialogue where Anne rants about what a charismatic and powerful individual Anthony had been. I thought it was quite good insight into the kind of person he was before dementia so I'm sad that they cut it from the film.

If I had any criticism, it's that the script occasionally went a little too far in trying to toy with the audience's perceptions. Why would Anthony be aware of his daughter's plan to go to Paris before she's told him(to the point where it confuses her when he brings it up)? That, and repeating some conversations ad verbatim. I get that people with dementia have their memories all over the place, that's the point, but there's a difference between dementia and schizophrenia. There's no reason why Anthony would experience the exact conversation multiple times as if he was time-looping.

Still, they're only small nitpicks in what's a pretty solid and emotionally involving story. Special shout-out to the set design. Having minor things constantly shift around whilst keeping the general layout of the apartment intact was clever.

It's the current year mind set where everyones understanding of deep storytelling is that of a 14 year old. It's the same garbage from TLOU 1&2 (They're both shit) where everything and everyone takes themselves why too fucking seriously
Everything oh so hopeless but non of it is earned. But funny enough i think they too relize this so to " lighted the mood" they take form Whedon and throw in some forced witty quips thats more funny in the writer's head then it actually is.

The entire fucking point of the Trek films, particularly the Abrams films, was that it was Star Trek with a big budget. If they wanted to make low budget shit, there's TV for that

Turns out The Last of Us was really about the final years of Ellen Page's tits.

I think that modern movies are made for audiences who want to feel smart. Think MovieBlob and his tortured defenses of Marvel movies on political grounds. Capeshit is stupid, but they often bring enough "social consciousness" to feel like they're good for something beyond mere entertainment (Whedon). Or they go "dark" and "serious" about extremely pedestrian themes (Synder).

I love 80s movies, partly because of nostalgia, but also because movies back then were fine with being JUST entertaining. An R-rated action movie would probably have a bunch of violence and gratuitous nudity in it, which is cool. There were social messages, but they weren't delivered with the same sledgehammer as they are now.
