I watched Apocalypse Now: Final Cut. Have never seen any other version of the film, so I can't really compare the changes

The original cut is better. The added scenes make already long movie way too drawn out and they break the flow of the movie. Especially the French Plantation scene doesn't add anything relevant to the story and breaks the gloomy mood of the last quarter of the film.

It indeed is incredible how well they managed to get the end of the film to work, considering that they really didn't have any idea how to end it and Marlon Brando refused to play according to the script and ad-libbed his own dialogue (and was often drunk on set). They just filmed Brando drunkenly speaking whatever came into his mind and wished they could edit the material for some sort of sensible ending. Coppola planned this movie over a decade, the original idea was to go to film it in Vietnam during the war time in the late 60's. Imagine how fucking crazy the idea would have been.

The film itself is, of course, a masterpiece. Right from the opening sequence with the burning jungle, muffled helicopter noises and The Doors, a real film enthusiast knows he is in for a treat.

Eh. I wasn't impressed when I first saw it years ago and I'm still not, probably because people keep calling it a masterpiece. It's got some good scenes and acting, but it's just a guy traveling through various war scenes until he finds a fat man who immediately dies. It feels like the work of a drugged out Italian who thinks he's saying something important about humanity and war or whatever because he's so high it literally made his heart pop. Supposedly the making-of documentary is pretty good, but I have yet to see it as nobody will upload the damn thing.
