I believe that is true. He turned down that role and Morpheus in The Matrix because he didn't understand the material.da PAC Nigguh wrote: ↑Sun Sep 13, 2020 2:31 pmWas there any truth to the rumor that he was the original choice for Gandalf?

Re: Dead Celebrities aren't much fun
I dunno about The Matrix. I've definitely heard Gandalf. Apparently they sent him the script, he read it, he didn't get it, he passed. Movie made millions of dollars. So, they sent him the script for League. He read it, he didn't get it but he decided to do it anyway. Movie flopped massively, so he said 'Fuck it. I don't understand this business any more' and retired.

Hollywood became too autistic for him.
And him as Gandalf? Dayum, and I thought the sexual tension between him and Frodo was already at the boiling point.

Autism attracts more autism. Sooner or later, an internet nobody will attract the exact kind of fans - and detractors - he deserves.

Then he did Sir Billi.Guest wrote: ↑Sat Sep 12, 2020 7:26 pmI prefer the Sean Connery approach. When he saw that he was only getting offered old man/grandad roles he said 'fuck this' and retired and stayed retired

I was about to bring that up. The whole movie was basically sucking his dick. He passed up big movie roles for Sir Billi. In a nutshell it's Foodfight but with less adverts. Just take a shot every time a James Bond reference is shoved in. I don't even think there was a Last Crusaders reference.

Was there at least a Zardoz reference?

I can respect why he starred in Sir Billi. I think it was Scotland's first big budget movie. Connery is a huge patriot, so while the movie sucked, he at least ends his career doing something for his country.

Is Spoony dead yet?
Re: Dead Celebrities aren't much fun
He didn't pass up anything for Sir Billi. Hollywood were not offering him roles, that's why he retired. The closest he came to being offered another role is when Spielberg asked if he'd come back for Crystal Skull.
You're an animation buff. Surely you understand that it's easier for an old man, who has difficulty moving around, to do a voice role, which he could do from home, than to schlep all the way to Hollywood or wherever and work six to eight weeks on a film.
He did the film for his grandson.
