The game is not bad by itself. Even the characters have very different personalities than they were later portrayed to have. I suppose Kingdom Hearts is just the same: I played 1 and 2 and liked the gameplay overall (specially 2, it's so much more polished), but I never hung anywhere near the autistic fanbase. I never even tried to make sense of all the sub/side games because it's just ridiculous.

Gonna be honest....
KH1 & KH2 were more or less okay. Nothing groundbreaking, but from a gameplay perspective, just okay. Even Chain of Memories (original GBA version, not the boring as hell PS2 version) was tolerable to a degree.
Everything after KH2 is when both gameplay and story went to complete shit & levels of extreme autism that rival most modern shonen crap.

Can't argue with that. It was, honestly, the last competently made mainline FF game for the most part. The rot at the core really began somewhere around FF7 and FF8, started picking up pace around 10-2 & 12, then went and shat the bed from then on once FF13 dropped. Series really hasn't been the same (not counting FF14: ARR) since Square's central teams are horribly mismanaged.

I guess. But since I don't care for the genre I'm sure I wouldn't like it. What makes it unique is the sheer amount of people that will say "If you try one JRPG, this should be it", which I'm 90% certain doesn't apply to me. I've seen plenty of JRPGs that I'm sure I'd sooner like than FF7.
